PHP upgrades

Moving older websites onto a supported version of PHP

If your website still runs on PHP 5, PHP 7 or an early version of PHP 8, it no longer gets security fixes. We'll check it for free, then quote to update it so it runs on a current version.

A free check first

We'll tell you which version of PHP your site runs and what it needs.

Supported versions only

We move sites onto versions of PHP that still get security fixes.

Why older PHP needs moving now

Every version of PHP gets security fixes for a few years, then stops.

PHP 8.1 and everything before it no longer get them (PHP 7 stopped in 2022, and PHP 5 in 2018), and PHP 8.2 stops at the end of December 2026. A site on an unsupported version carries on working, so it's easy to leave alone, but when a new flaw turns up there's no fix for it. That's what happened with PHP2Shell in October 2026, when the official fixes only covered PHP 8.2 and newer.

Moving a site onto a newer version isn't always a quick switch. Code written for PHP 5 or 7 can rely on functions that have since been removed, or on looser rules about how data is handled, and plugins and themes that were never updated can stop working altogether. So the work is as much in the site's code as on the server.

The older the site, the more there is around it. A server held back for an old version of PHP usually has an operating system, database and other software just as far out of date, and some older applications were supplied with their code encrypted, so they can't be updated at all. For those, rebuilding the parts you still use is often quicker and safer than trying to upgrade.

From a free check to a supported version

  1. A free check

We look at your site and tell you which version of PHP it runs on, and what it would need to move to a supported one. There's no charge for this.

  2. A quote

If it needs work, we'll quote for updating the code, and for upgrading the server or moving the site to us, whichever suits you.

  3. Updating and testing

We update the code, themes and plugins that need it, and test the site on the new version before anything changes on the live site.

  4. Switching over

We move the live site onto the new version, on its current hosting or ours, and check it's working as it should.

Upgrade where you are, or move to us

Some hosts let you choose a newer version of PHP, and some can't offer one at all. We'll work with what you have, and we'll tell you if moving is the better option.

Stay with your current host

We update the code so your site runs on a supported version, then switch it over on your existing hosting, where your host allows it.

Move to our hosting

We upgrade the site and move it onto our managed hosting in UK data centres, where PHP and the server are kept up to date for you from then on.

Rebuild if it's past upgrading

If a site is too old to upgrade sensibly, we'll say so, and quote for rebuilding the parts you still use instead, so the old server can be switched off.

Questions about PHP upgrades

Your host or developer can tell you. If you're not sure, send us your website's address and we'll check it for you, free of charge.

Your site will keep working, but PHP 7 no longer gets security fixes, so any new flaw found in it stays open. PHP2Shell is the most recent example, where the official fixes only covered PHP 8.2 and newer.

Sometimes, but the older the code, the more of it needs rewriting, and code that was supplied encrypted can't be updated at all. Often it's quicker and safer to rebuild just the parts you still use, such as a customer area or a connection another system relies on, and switch the old server off.

It can. UK data protection law expects personal data to be kept secure, and keeping it on software that no longer gets security fixes is hard to defend. If a breach puts people's details at risk, it has to be reported to the ICO within 72 hours.

No. An upgrade changes what runs underneath your site, so it should look and work just as it does now.

No. We work on WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and custom-built PHP sites, including ones another developer built.

We'll tell you which version of PHP your site runs on, whether it's had the latest security fixes, and roughly what it would take to move it to a supported version.

It depends on how old the site is and how much of its code needs updating, so we'll quote once we've checked it.
